Bacterial Habitats in Extreme Environmentsext. In fact, it is likely that the great physiological and phylogenetic diversity of prokaryotes we see today is the result of evolutionary pressure on these organisms to colonize every habitat and every microenvironment within each habitat that will support life.

Microbial Diversity and Ecology of Alkaline Environmentsulations flourishing at pH values above 9 have been largely restricted to surveys of prokaryotes (both Bacteria and Archaea), although it is certain (largely from microscopic observation) that there are eukaryotic microbes capable of growth and activity at high pH values — to date these have not been examined in detail.

Anaerobes from Extreme Environments paper describes the microbial diversity of anaerobes isolated from extreme environments. Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 show the phylogenetic distribution of extremophilic anaerobes amongst the . and . domains, respectively.

Sulfur Metabolism among Hyperthermophilesonsidered here. For many of these organisms, we do not know if the organism derives any energy from carrying out sulfur reduction. This review will compare mechanisms of sulfidogenesis in selected hyperthermophiles to highlight features that might shed light on the mechanisms and evolution of this metabolism.
