Recollections of J.L. Austin to me, he made an enormous difference to Oxford, and truth to tell he made an enormous difference to philosophy. So it is an honour to speak here, and though I did not fully appreciate it at the time, it was an honour to have been taught by Austin and to have had so many conversations with him.
