描述.This Open Access edited volume addresses the important role of education in society through the lens of theoretical concepts developed by Norbert Elias. This book sets out to challenge dominant perspectives within the sociology of education by reorientating traditional debates about socialisation, childhood, early years education, care, schooling and the curriculum, focusing on the relational learning processes that lie at the heart of pedagogic relationships between parents, teachers, children and peers. It also offers an innovative perspective on some of the key debates in childhood studies, bringing together and relating the different aspects of childhood through a generational lens. Authors from different countries follow young children as they grow up and learn how to become civilized in institutions in contemporary society, discussing how from one generation to the next they learn from adults and their peers an enormous social fund of knowledge about their world..

Upper Secondary School as an Innovative Health Laboratory: A Process Study About Exercise, Sport andthe school in a health promotion context on a macro level. Elias’s notion of the balance between I-, We- and They-identities as well as the distinction between established and outsider groups was also employed as a way to understand the power struggle between individuals and groups within the figuration on a micro level.

Sociology of Early Childhood: Why We Need Child Psychoanalysisored for their influence on his approach to childhood—for example, Wilhelm Reich’s concept of ‘a(chǎn)rmour’. Moreover, I will argue that there are other related approaches in child psychoanalysis such as Anna Freud’s concept of developmental lines that can be integrated with Elias’s perspective to explain young children’s development.

Bringing Norbert Elias to School: Education and the Civilising Process fact that today’s civilising of children in welfare societies takes place in schools and in families that are closely dependent on these institutions means that the ‘institutional sociality’ that children learn in school has a great impact on the norms and conduct in wider society.
