Magnetism of Insulators,c currents imposed by external sources. Only quantum mechanics can explain electronic states corresponding to permanent currents at the microscopic scale. We have just seen an example in the case of superconductors. Likewise, the electron orbital angular momentum and spin are the purely quantum entities which underlie the magnetism of materials.

Spin Dynamics and Magnetic Resonance,cle. Materials must be optimised to reduce such losses, in order to render them usable in setups involving high alternating currents. On the other hand, in weak enough applied fields, the magnetic response does become linear, and under such conditions the dissipation may be extremely weak.
