Thermogravimetry (TG),Measurements of changes in sample mass with temperature are made using a thermobalance. This is a combination of a suitable electronic microbalance with a furnace and associated temperature programmer. The balance should be in a suitably enclosed system so that the atmosphere can be controlled (Fig. 3.1 and section 3.4).

Less-common techniques,Under this heading, referring to Table 1.1, come emanation thermal analysis (ETA), thermomagnetometry, thermoelectrometry and thermosonimetry. These techniques are all gaining in popularity but usually require more specialized equipment which is often not commercially available as complete systems.

Thermal analysis equipment,A bewildering array of equipment is available to anyone starting out in thermal analysis and selecting a suitable system is not an easy decision. It is advisable first to collect the pamphlets and specifications of most systems from the suppliers (section 16.2), and then attempt to make a preliminary selection by considering the following factors.

Thermoptometry, major technique is thermomicroscopy, i.e. direct observation of the sample. Other techniques involve measurement of total light reflected or transmitted (thermophotometry), light of specific wavelength(s) (thermospectrometry), refractive index (thermorefractometry), or emitted light (thermoluminescence).
