描述This textbook introduces the concepts and tools that biomedical and chemical engineering students need to know in order to translate engineering problems into a numerical representation using scientific fundamentals. Modeling concepts focus on problems that are directly related to biomedical and chemical engineering.?A variety of computational tools are presented, including MATLAB, Excel, Mathcad, and COMSOL, and a brief introduction to each tool is accompanied by multiple computer lab experiences. The numerical methods covered are basic linear algebra and basic statistics, and traditional methods like Newton’s method, Euler Integration, and trapezoidal integration. The book presents the reader with numerous examples and worked problems, and practice problems are included at the end of each chapter..

Basic Probability and Statistics,st be able to quantify uncertainty and understand its implications. Probability and statistics can help predict expected uncertainty and quantify measured variability. Monte Carlo models can be used to simulate random systems.

Mathematical Fundamentals,earned in the past. Students who feel these topics are not quite mastered are encouraged to look for additional resources to improve their knowledge. Many mathematical and engineering concepts build on previous ideas and methods, so it is very important to master the basics to have a firm foundation to build upon.

Engineering Modeling,urce and resistors. Finally, the concept of conservation of mass is presented for systems with chemical reactions. This “mass balance” modeling concept is the main focus of this chapter, as it is a key concept used by Chemical and Biomedical engineers.

Linear Modeling,imate values beyond the range of data. Starting with data, linear model coefficients can be determined using linear regression methods and linear algebra. In some cases, nonlinear equations can be transformed into linear form. In other cases, nonlinear expressions can be approximated using Taylor series linearization.
