描述Ecosystems are still a puzzle for mankind. We would like to be able to know their reactions and control them, but repeatedly we have been surprised by their unexpected reactions to our somewhat hasty actions. We unfortunately have to admit that our present knowledge about ecosystems and their true nature is rather limited. Many excellent contributions to a more profound understanding of ecosystems have been launched during the last two decades, but if you do not know the field, it looks as if all the presented ecosystem theories are in complete discord with each other. However, ecosystems are extremely complex and only a pluralistic view will be able to reveal their basic properties. The different approaches therefore have much in common, when you go deeper into the core material, than the first superficial more glance will be able to tell and there is therefore a natural need for a unification of the various approaches to ecosystem theories. It has for many years been my desire to attempt to make a unification of the many excellent thoughts, ideas and observations about ecosystems, that scientists have contributed. These thoughts, ideas and hypotheses have not been made in vain.

Models in Ecology,mprehensive overall picture of the ecosystem, because we can, as discussed in Chapters 1-2, only cover our observations completely by use of a pluralistic view. Modelling is a very useful tool in our effort to achieve the best possible pluralistic view.

Utility Theory, Indirect Effect and Ascendency,nts are influencing each other far more than just by the direct link between two adjacent components. Any change in the system will propagate to all components of the network and the network gives information about the pathways that the propagation will follow.

Chaos, Fractals and Ecology,he Newtonian illusion of absolute space and time, while quantum theory has eliminated the Newtonian dream of controllable measurements. Chaos theory has eliminated the Laplacian illusion of deterministic predictability and can therefore be conceived as a ticking bomb under reductionistic science.

Catastrophe Theory and Ecology,s see Poston and Stewart (1978). A complete list of catastrophe functions can be found in this reference, too. The theory has been applied in several fields including social sciences, medicine, ecology and economy (Zeeman 1982, Poston and Stewart 1978, Kempf 1980 and Loehle 1989)

Dynamic of Ecosystems,ted in the right context, and only if it is developed according to a sound ecological knowledge of what is essential to include in the model for the focal ecological problem. In addition, it is crucial, that the models possess the basic (holistic) properties of the system that the model is supposed to imitate.
