Hypnoticsved. As has been explained earlier, the sleep—wakefulness balance results from an inherent rhythmicity of portions of the brain stem which can be modified by external influences. In consequence during wakefulness, the cerebral cortex is stimulated by the reticular activating system via the thalamic nuclei.
