Detection Limits in the Far Infrared,ton-background-limited performance and hence very deep detection limits. The dominant noise sources — photon noise, confusion by distant galaxies, and confusion by IR cirrus — scale with nearly the same power of the telescope aperture. As a result, the integration times required to reach confusion limits are nearly aperture-independent.

Infrared Telescope in Space: IRTS,timized to observe the diffuse extended emission, and will survey about 10% of the sky in 20 days of mission life. The IRTS will provide significant information on cosmology, interstellar matter, late type stars, and interplanetary dust.

SOFIA: The Next Generation Airborne Observatory,here in the world. The concept is based on 20 years of experience with NASA’s Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO), which SOFIA would replace. SOFIA will complement the capabilities of other future space missions, and will enable scientists to make observations which would otherwise be made from space.
