描述SECIII-Social, Ethical and Cognitive Issues of Informatics and ICT Welcome to the post-conference book of SECIII, the IFIP Open Conference on Social, Ethical and Cognitive Issues of Informatics and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) which took place from July 22-26, 2002 at the University of Dortmund, Germany, in co-operation with the German computer society (Gesellschaft flir Informatik). Unlike most international conferences, those organised within the IFIP education community are active events. This wasn‘t a dry academic conference - teachers, lecturers and curriculum experts, policy makers, researchers and manufacturers mingled and worked together to explore, reflect and discuss social, ethical and cognitive issues. The added value lies in what they, the participants, took away in new ideas for future research and practice, and in the new networks that were formed, both virtual and real. In addition to Keynote Addresses and Paper Presentations from international authors, there were Provocative Paper sessions, Case Studies, Focussed Debates and Creative Exchange sessions as well as professional Working Groups who debated particular themes. ICT in Education: Aspirations and Tensions,aints on change and innovation are illustrated with three main scenarios to portray possible futures for schooling. The main aims of the paper are to motivate and direct debate, and to provide access to a framework that others may use to etch out and explore their own preferred visions for the future of education.

Learning and Teaching in Socio-technical Environments,mpirical findings in the case of the practical usage of a learning environment and to propose measures of improvement. Ubiquitous self-description and continuous facilitation of communication processes can be considered as important success factors.

,Critical thinking and an ethical approach to studying History — the case for ICT,two alternate views of critical thinking — the orthodox and the second cycle — and their connection to historical inquiry. The paper will show how these two approaches to critical thinking are reflected in an Internet project, which allowed eight Canadian classrooms to study history from a First Nations (indigenous peoples) perspective.

Learning Software Engineering with EASE,mature andragogical methodologies. EASE has significantly improved the learning outcomes in both undergraduate and graduate courses and the paper proposes that it should be adapted and trialled in secondary education and industrial training environments.

Learning to solve ICT/informatics-based problems,s of learning may inform the development of pedagogy for ICT. The components of a model of problem solving that fits in with the primary emphasis of ICT/Informatics courses are explored in relation to key learning theories. Important pedagogical implications are identified.
