描述This monograph deals with various classes of deterministic continuous time optimal control problems wh ich are defined over unbounded time intervala. For these problems, the performance criterion is described by an improper integral and it is possible that, when evaluated at a given admissible element, this criterion is unbounded. To cope with this divergence new optimality concepts; referred to here as "overtaking", "weakly overtaking", "agreeable plans", etc. ; have been proposed. The motivation for studying these problems arisee primarily from the economic and biological aciences where models of this nature arise quite naturally since no natural bound can be placed on the time horizon when one considers the evolution of the state of a given economy or species. The reeponsibility for the introduction of this interesting class of problems rests with the economiste who first studied them in the modeling of capital accumulation processes. Perhaps the earliest of these was F. Ramsey who, in his seminal work on a theory of saving in 1928, considered a dynamic optimization model defined on an infinite time horizon. Asymptotic Stability with a Discounted Criterion; Global and Local Analysis,terest rate .. In that case the relative weighting given to a distant future makes it negligible, hence one may suppose that high positive values of . can have a destabilizing effect on the optimal trajectories.

Existence of Overtaking Optimal Solutions for Nonautonomous Control Systems,s of the previous chapter thereby obtaining analogous results for nonautonomous systems where we have, in addition, assumed weaker convexity and compactness hypotheses. Examples 7.1 to 7.3 motivate the developments given below as these models cannot be addressed by the previous theorems.

Dynamical Systems with Unbounded Time Interval in Engineering, Ecology and Economics,ulator problem, the second one deals with a pest-control problem and finally the third one concerns optimal economic growth. From the consideration of these three typical problems it will be possible to introduce the basic optimality concepts for infinite horizon control problems.

Turnpike Properties for Classes of Nonautonomous Nonconvex Control Problems,lar we remind the reader of the sufficient conditions for overtaking optimality given in Theorems 2.4, 2.5, and 4.4. We notice that the results given in Chapter 2 (i.e., Theorems 2.4, 2.5) are given for the general nonautonomous systems whereas Theorem 4.4 applies only to the autonomous case.
