描述.Incomplete Category Fronting. is a detailed investigationof the syntax of incomplete category fronting in German, carried outfrom a cross-linguistic perspective. The study presents a wealth ofempirical evidence involving unbound traces created by remnanttopicalization, wh-movement, scrambling, left dislocation, andextraposition. Four characteristic properties of remnant movement areidentified that pose severe problems for a representational movementtheory. It is argued that these properties can be fruitfully addressedon the basis of Chomsky‘s minimalist program, and that they followfrom a derivational movement theory that incorporates the BarriersCondition, the Strict Cycle Condition, Fewest Steps, Last Resort, andthe Minimal Link Condition but completely dispenses with surfacefilters. .Incomplete. .Category Fronting. provides anempirical underpinning for the minimalist program and presents apowerful argument for a derivational theory of grammar. ..Audience: Incomplete Category Fronting. will interest alllinguists working on theoretical syntax, Germanic syntax or thesyntax-semantics interface.
