Experimental approaches to the role of mononuclear phagocytes in non-specific immunity difficult to understand. PMNs are a homogeneous population of fully mature cells which can be easily collected in large numbers for biochemical and functional investigations. Disorders of these cells produce well-defined clinical syndromes and much work is being carried out in an endeavour to understand the underlying mechanisms.
