描述In transfusion medicine the scientific fundamentals ofimmunology have had a considerable clinical impact. Transfusion maysuppress the immunity but some patients could suffer disadvantagesincluding GvHD, alloimmunisation and possible cancer, where whitecells (WBC) play pivotal roles in this phenomenon, presenting antigensand producing cytokines. A clinical application of this practice isLAK-cells targeted against cancer. MHC on the WBC may provideadditional immunological modulations through series of secondarymessengers. Thus reduction of WBC in the blood and bone marrow may beadvantageous for patients. On the other hand, sharing a part of MHC ormaking the transplanted white cells anergic by storage may be evenmore advantageous for patients. CMV infection could mimic part of thisMHC..UV radiation is effective in the inactivation of the WBC althoughfilters are easy means for such removal. However, their accuratequantification requires flow cytometry that has considerable potentialapplication in blood transfusions. Idiotypic antibody could play animportant role in platelet theory.
