描述The area of the Lake of Galilee, which is the site of the Fifth Confer- ence on Lymphatic Tissues and Germinal Centers, has been a germinal center of dramatic events in human history. Thus, some two million years ago, it seems to have harbored an important phase of human evolu- tion, when the descendants of the African Australopithecus migrated north- wards, attempting to become Homo sapiens. Two thousand years ago, this very place was a germinal center for a new religion which determined some of the most important components of the history of western civilization. This may have been the first significant contribution of the people of the Lake of Galilee area to the world of ideas and values. More recently, some 70 years ago, this very place was a germinal center for a great ex- periment aimed at the translation into actual reality of ethical and social values, by the establishment of the first kibbutz in Israel on this shore. We, therefore, hoped that by selecting this place for the Fifth Germinal Centers Meeting we could expect the inspiration of the site to generate new concepts and views.

IgA Surface Determinants on Cells from the Chicken Embryoglobulin surface determinants in hatched chickens (9), cells from the yolk sac, bursa of Fabricius, thymus and spleen of embryonal chickens have been tested in an indirect immunofluorescence test for surface determinants reacting with anti chicken IgA sera.

Bursa of Fabricius: Uptake of Radioactive Particles and Radiotoxic “Sealing” of Bursal Follicles led to the postulate that the bursa may be primarily an immunologic contact organ where lymphoid cells become sensitized against intestinal antigens (3). The above observations have been confirmed and extended by other authors (4).

Involvement of Cells With ‘B’ Properties in Development of T Helpers raised as to whether the embryonic liver contains cells which are uncommitted, and the pathways of development can be imposed by effects of micro-environmental or humoral factors, or whether cells with T properties develop from cells which already express B characteristics.

Ontogeny of T Cell Function in the Fetal Lambupt appearance of a single general immunologic control mechanism. The apparently general nature of this sequential maturation of immunologic competence is supported by data in such disparate species as the fetal lamb (1, 2), the opossum (3), and the mouse (4).

The Ontogeny of Bursa- and Thymus-Specific Cell Surface Antigens in the Chickenneated (4). The present report summarizes experimental results on the appearance and frequency of cells bearing antigenic determinants defined by anti-bursa cell and anti-thymus cell sera during embryonal life of the chicken.

Immunological Potential of Yolk Sac Cells. The questions raised in this respect are whether at this early stage of development the cells already have the potential to produce immune responses, and whether they can express such a potential. Answering this may advance the understanding of the generation of diversity.
