This volume deals with recursive pyramids, which combine theadvantages of available multiresolution structures and which areconvenient both for global and local image processing. Recursivepyramids are based on regular hierarchical (recursive) structurescontaining data on image fragments of different sizes. Such an imagerepresentation technique enables the effective manipulation ofpictorial information as well as the development of special hardwareor data structures. The major aspects of this book are two originalmathematical models of greyscale and binary images represented byrecursive structures. Image compression, transmission and processingare discussed using these models. A number of applications arepresented, including optical character recognition, expert systems andspecial computer architecture for pictorial data processing. Themajority of results are presented as algorithms applicable to discreteinformation fields of arbitrary dimensions (e.g. 2-D or 3-Dimages)..The book is divided into six chapters: Chapter 1 provides a briefintroduction.
