Abaca (Manila Hemp),round rhizomes which spread and bud. The aboveground part of the plant consists of a pseudostem formed from overlapping leaf bases; the true stem, which bears the inflorescence, arises from the centre of the pseudostem. The commercial fibre is the sclerenchyma of the leaf bases.
