描述.This book redefines the relationship between Marxism and history. At its roots,Marxism was aimed at analyzing society in order to change it, reflecting on thepast to create the ‘poetry of the future.’ No single event of the past was asimportant to early Marxists as the French Revolution of 1789. Studying the varyinguses of the history of that past event among Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, andprominent European Marxists before 1914 (Karl Kautsky, V.I. Lenin, and others),this book argues that we should take the historiography of concrete past eventsseriously. It was not only an auxiliary element of Marxism, but a core constitutiveelement in its formation. Thus, this book calls for transcending traditionalapproaches to Marxism as a fixed set of social theories combined with strategiesfor the present and future. Important to students of Marxism, the labormovement, and the French Revolution alike, this study contains refreshingperspectives on the interplay betweenpast, present, and future and on the roleof states, social classes, socio-economic determination, and political organizationin history..

Revolution and the Surplus of History, utopian impulses, conceptualizing . stressing the contradictions of concrete history, the first generations of Marxists in effect emphasized the irreducibility of history to its conceptual abstractions, even if this was not consistently reflected in their general statements on social theory.
