Harold Edgerton had come over to RAE to help build a huge strobe lamp that we could put in a bomber and photograph at night how badly our bombs had missed their target.

A High Speed Mechanical Shutter Driven by a Gas Motorthe light lasts too long before or after the framing period. The problem is normally dealt with by the use of specially designed light sources with non—luminous objects. These have a square pulse output which corresponds with the camera framing time. Unfortunately such light sources are bulky, fragile and expensive.
