Optical Receivers,This chapter concentrates on receivers intended for the direct detection of digital data consisting of a stream of light pulses, where the presence and the absence of a pulse correspond to the transmission of a binary mark and space, respectively. The block diagram of a basic telecommunications receiver is depicted in Fig. 8.1.

Fundamentals of Fiber-Optic Transmissions,The extraordinary advances in fiber and semiconductor technology have resulted in a very rapid growth in the performance of lightwave communications systems. The aim of this chapter is to explain in sufficient detail how this is achieved.
