Switching Algebra,For economical and practical reasons it is desirable when designing circuits to find the simplest possible form for a given circuit.

Checking Circuits,These circuits are used to check whether a given number . out of . relays are switched on. The simplest example of such a circuit is clearly a make contact unit, which can be used to check whether a given relay is energized or not.

Connecting Circuits,The purpose of a connecting circuit is to connect one device of a certain sort with another device of a different sort. A selector, together with the relays which operate it, is in fact a connecting circuit. In this case a locking circuit is used to stop the selector at the right time, as described e. g. in Fig. 155 of Chapter 9.
