Interpolation and Approximate Evaluation of Functions,In the last chapter, we studied the power series approach to the approximation of functions and some of its uses. It was mentioned there that this is by no means the only (nor, in many cases, the best) way ot tackling this particular problem. In this chapter, we consider some of the alternatives.

Iterative Solution of Equations; Convergence of Sequences,ates of the required solution which we hope . to this solution. It will therefore be necessary to study exactly what is meant by these terms and this is done later in this chapter. A much fuller treatment of the convergence of sequences has been given by Hawkins (1988).

Linear Equations,pplication and in the numerical solution of systems of differential equations. We shall see later that one of the common approaches to the approximation of functions reduces to the solution of a system of linear equations.
