Physical Models of Perfect Quasicrystal Growthtiling, according to “physical” rules, i.e., ones involving one-by-one addition of tiles to a growing cluster. I will then show some of our new work on the properties of defects in these growth algorithms.

Generation and Dynamics of Defects in Two-Dimensional Quasicrystalsre. In a first simulation, based on a Eden-type growth algorithm of a Penrose Tiling, we observe defects similar to vacancies which do not destroy quasi-long-range order. In a second simulation, a molecular dynamics based on an atomistic model, we find that phason relaxation occurs only in presence of vacancies.
