Historical review and introductionIn 1953, Melrose, Bentall and I., together with a group of keen technicians and devoted nurses, carried out our first operations using cardiopulmonary bypass. The initial procedures, which would now be described as supportive bypass, enabled us to carry out closed heart procedures (such as aortic valvotomy) on very sick patients with success.
