A Review of Optical F-Region Processes in the Polar Atmospheresuch as the Atmosphere Explorer satellites is given. The effects of transport by neutral winds and electromagnetic drifts on the morphology are also discussed and illustrated by recent model calculations for n(.d) horizontal transport.

Wind Induced Composition Effects at High Latitudeses. As a feedback mechanism, advective mass transport completely changes the “primary” composition effects induced by eddy diffusion. Owing to the rotational nature of EXB momentum coupling its signature in composition is comparatively weak, and clearly distinguishable from the effects of Joule dissipation.

The Lower Ionosphere at High Latitudesg solar particle and electron precipitation events are considered. In addition, the growth of water cluster ions, H+. (H20)n, during conditions of low mesospheric temperatures in summer is considered in relation to the formation of noctilucent clouds.

Optical Emissions in the Polar Auroral E-Regionxcited in a two step process similar to the Barth mechanism for the green line. It is proposed that monitoring of the green line and the atmospheric bands will allow the atomic oxygen concentration in the lower thermosphere to be determined under both auroral and non-auroral conditions.

The Distant Magnetosphere: Reconnection in the Boundary Layers, Cusps and Tail Lobes, for instance, the solar wind does on the moon. In case of a zero or weak magnetic moment, but with the existence of an extended atmosphere, the plasma will interact with the latter via its ionized component. In the solar system, examples of this class are comets and the planet Venus.
