In this chapter we give a cursory treatment of abstract G-structures on manifolds thus paving the way to various applications to be followed in Chapter 7. Our exposition throughout this chapter follows [Ko] closely.

Several applications of exterior differential system theory in differential geometry are given in this chapter. The theme is that of embedding a given G-structure.
