Our studies (Whetsell et al, 1979; Whetsell, 1979; Whetsell and Nicklas, 1980) in organotypic cultures of rat striatum (CA), striatum-plus-frontal cortex (CA-CX) and frontal cortex alone (CX), have demonstrated that the neurotoxic effects of KA can be observed only in CA-CX and CX cultures.

It is involved in energy metabolism and fatty acid synthesis, incorporated into proteins and peptides and is even a precursor for the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. The usefulness of KA to study the relationship between epilepsy and brain pathology is reviewed and the possible causes of the particular vulnerability of the ammon’s horn to epilepsy is discussed.
