Current deficiencies in the availability of quantifiable bioassays and in the formulation of research needs and priorities are highlighted.

The use of environmental assays for impact assessmentanalyses for toxic chemicals and the relevance of bioassays for predicting risk to ecosystems. Research is urgently needed to find better ways to solve these problems, particularly with respect to chronic exposures.

Zielvereinbarung und variable Vergütungconclusion is that some bioassays have more severe problems than others, but a concern with all of them is that responses observed in particular systems may not be relevant in general. The possibility of developing a general theoretical infrastructure for bioassays that addresses this problem is considered.
