Settings of a Professional Lifetime,were businessmen and government officials in the small communities of Western Iowa. The first 7 years of my life were spent in one of these small towns where my father ran the general store. I had a happy early childhood in our family of five children.

In Search of Objectives,d the last remaining contact I had with a small area of Liverpool in which I had been born on January 5, 1944, where I had gone to the Hebrew Primary School and the Collegiate Grammar school. The same square mile also housed Liverpool University, where I had obtained my undergraduate degree in psychology in 1964 and my doctorate in 1968.

In June 1941 we ended up in Shanghai, China (one of the few places where no visa was needed) where we were trapped by the outbreak of the Pacific war. I was lucky to attend an outstanding school—Shanghai Jewish School. Thus, when after the war we emigrated to Austr
