The various changes add up to a large-scale ‘a(chǎn)nti- clockwise’ shift in the vowel system. However, the phonetic symbols most widely in use for British English reflect hardly any of these changes.

Their diphthongal character is now rather more pronounced than it was in RP. More accurate symbols are [?j] and [?w].

The Law of Business OrganizationsRP used short-lax [?] in many contexts. Today it occurs only before consonants. Elsewhere it’s been replaced with the long-tense FLEECE vowel /i?/ [?j], or in closing diphthongs with a glide, [i?] or [j].
