Structural and Functional Adaptations of Key Organs,spiratory organs such as the gills and lungs. In order to understand water and ion balance, it is necessary to know the structure of the kidney and bladder. Finally, the female reproductive organs, especially the ovary, and oogenesis will be described in order to clarify the reproductive strategies of amphibians inhabiting xeric environments.

Ecological Adaptations,mental work has been carried out on the larval stages, perhaps because they are more accessible than adults and easy to maintain. As it is difficult to decide on the best approach, I shall consider here the ecological adaptations in general of amphibians from xeric habitats to both environments in which they live.

Xeric Habitats and Their Amphibian Inhabitants,ation ranges between 100 and 250mm. Under xeric habitats we include areas where the annual rainfall can be higher provided it is restricted to a certain short period of the year; during the rest of the year, there is no precipitation nor any surface water. Temperatures during the summer are generally high in both arid and semi-arid habitats.

Reflections and Conclusions,ric habitats. These have been discussed in previous chapters. I should now like to examine the information assembled here in an integrative way in order to determine whether new and fruitful avenues of research can be pointed out.
