Of potentially greater concern, are the more subtle chronic changes occurring over large regions that may take many years to develop. A major source of that concern has been the effects of atmospheric pollutants on terrestrial biota.

This chapter reviews research activities in these two areas and suggests where additional research is needed. It focuses on trees and forest ecosystems, as others (Bell et al. Chapter 3, this volume) discuss similar aspects with other plants.
