Fire in Fynbos,the zone and the lessons from them are embedded in the manager’s lore. To the biologist the consequences of fire often seem disastrous. It is hard for an observer to imagine that the blackened waste to be seen after a fynbos fire is merely a stage in the cycle of regeneration and development of such rich and attractive communities.

Effects of Fire on Vegetation Structure and Dynamics, summarized, as well as published information on the different vegetation structural variables that have been shown to respond to fire. Finally, information on fire effects is summarized for fynbos, forest, grassland and savanna. Information on the karoo biome is too scant to justify a review.

The Effect of Fire on Soil and Microclimate,ems is the fundamental cause of this difficulty in understanding the interaction between fire regime and the physical environment. Factors such as climate, vegetation, soil type and human activity create widely divergent conditions that have a profound influence on the long-term response of soil and microclimate to fire.
