描述Mangroves are salt-adapted plants that are found along many ofthe world‘s tropical and sub-tropical coastlines. Regrettably, theseplants are being lost due to over-exploitation, pollution, conversionto agriculture and aquaculture and other causes. This is havingimportant consequences for local human populations that traditionallyrely on this resource, and is upsetting the fine balance needed tomaintain this highly productive ecosystem. .This text brings together some papers from two recent internationalsymposia on the mangrove ecosystem. It provides an outline of futuredirections in mangrove research considered to be urgent by prominentmangrove scientists. Contributions include aspects of populationdifferentiation in mangrove species that have been very little studiedso far, ecological function, and restoration and management of themangrove ecosystem. This book is intended for scientists activelyworking in the areas of mangrove ecology and management.
