Surface Modification by Rapid Solidification Laser and Electron Beam Processing,surface layer of material develops steep thermal gradients, which results in rapid solidification (quenching) of the molten layer, after the cessation of energy input. Calculations show that cooling rates of 10. –10. °K/sec are readily attainable in appropriately thin sections.
