Marine Denitrificationlied by the recycling of organic and inorganic fixed nitrogen. Recycled nitrogen is used because large amounts of energy are required to use elemental nitrogen (i.e., break the N-N bond) and most marine organisms cannot use molecular nitrogen as a source of nitrogen for growth.

Distributed and Parallel Systemsand soils are also unrelenting (Hauck, 1981). Removal of inorganic nitrogen is attributable indirectly to nitrification and directly to denitrification. Nitrate is generated by the one and reduced to elemental nitrogen by the other.

The potential was also higher in the fertilized treatments than in those receiving no fertilizer nitrate. These results probably reflect energy availability and nitrate abundance, respectively.
