The answers to these questions are important both for our theoretical understanding of fundamental interactions of nuclei and particles and because the answers have significant astrophysical and cosmological implications.

More recently, the Chooz [6.5] and Palo Verde [6.6, 6.7] experiments have confirmed these findings with greater sensitivity. The purpose of this chapter is to highlight the developments involving reactor neutrinos and to outline the current status and future studies.

Studies in History and Philosophy of Scienceelds, neutrinos meet the basic requirements for astronomy. Their unique advantage arises from a fundamental property: they are affected only by the weakest of nature’s forces (but for gravity) and are therefore essentially unabsorbed as they travel cosmological distances between their origin and us.
