In this chapter, related work in the domain of virtual agents is presented. Cassell defined the term embodied conversational agents as computer-generated characters that are able to demonstrate some of the properties that humans use in face-to-face conversations, such as producing and responding to verbal and nonverbal communication [CSPC00].
