Congo Free State in 1884, renamed the Belgian Congo in 1908 (Fig. 3-1). After independence in 1960, the country was named Zaire, and Stanleyville was renamed Kisangani. Following a rebellion and change of government in 1997, the country’s name was changed yet again, to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
