Varieties of Scientific Realisment: Is development, or at least the develop-mental process one is studying, characterized by gradual change or is it marked by sudden reorganization? Another way to pose the question is whether development involves the same principles across the life span, or do different principles operate at different developmental levels (Lerner, 1976)?
