描述In view of its extreme complexity the mathematical description of the mechanical behaviour of granular materials is an extremely difficult task. Today many different models compete with each other. However, the complexity of the models hinders their comparison, and the potential users are confused and, often, disencouraged. This book is expected to serve as a milestone in the present situation, to evaluate the present methodes, to clear up the situation, to focus and encourage for further research activities.

Uniqueness, second order work and bifurcation in hypoplasticityterion are studied. A complete shear band localization analysis is given and considered as a special case of non uniqueness of some boundary value problems. Similarly, invertibility and controlability are studied from the same point of view. Finally a general overview of all these results is given.

Comparison of hypoplastic and elastoplastic modelling of undrained triaxial tests on loose sand non-associative plasticity with combined hardening. Both models perform qualitatively well in spite of some discrepancies in comparison with experiments. A modification of the hypoplastic model is tested showing both an improvement as well as additional malfunctions in the model behaviour.

Does engineering need science?fic base or content; this is usual in most routine engineering, but also in some important works. In some cases, thus, the answer to the title question might be: ”no”. Some clarification is needed. In order to contribute to such a clarification, first of all a definition of science and a definition of engineering is needed.

The influence of time derivative terms on the mechanical behaviour of loose sandseoretical interpretation taking into account the influence of the time factor is suggested. The onset of instability is assumed to be linked to the evolution of state variables: two different constitutive models based on Perzyna type visco-plasticity are introduced. Numerical results are critically compared with experimental data.
