A basic algorithm for the generation of mechanical assembly sequencesbly, all contacts between the parts in that subassembly are established. Furthermore, it is assumed that the feasibility of joining two subassemblies is independent of how those subassemblies were built. These assumptions are consistent with the trend towards product designs that are suitable for automatic assembly[.,.].

On the automatic generation of assembly plans be rapidly generated. The ideal system would be one which could automatically program itself to produce a new product given only a description of the product. It is in the pursuit of this goal that the assembly planning problem arises.
