Polyethylene wear and its consequences, failure of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement, and long term implant durability for younger patients are all issues that still affect hip implant research and development. These problems led many investigators to search for improved bearing surfaces and means of cementless fixation.

Ossicular Replacement Prostheses,the ‘gold standard’ against which all other materials are compared. But lack of availability, among other reasons, prevents homografts from being the most common material used for replacement of ossicles. For reasons discussed later, ossicular replacements are usually made of synthetic materials such as polyethylene and ceramics.
