Michael E. Mount,Frederick W. Oehmehought. Rabelais, Erasmus, Budé, Vives, Montaigne, Ramus, and many other humanists in France and elsewhere, marked the beginning of the age of the great educational theoreticians.. Their works helped sixteenth-century man, newly conscious of his cultural heritage, to preserve it and pass it on to coming generations.

This rather lengthy presentation — two hundred pages in 12° in the edition of 1686 — is the principal exposition of Fleury’s educational thought. It is not, however, the only one; and, since others might easily go unnoticed, it is appropriate that they be identified and, at least, briefly analyzed.
