Texts and Monographs in Physicsbles 1–21 in Chapter 4 give the same information for the non-protein amino acids, although there are no IUPAC-IUB recommendations for compounds in this category; if a non-protein amino acid cannot be named as a derivative of a protein amino acid, then it is named according to the generally accepted conventions [1].

Despite attempts by a number of industrial companies to provide a cheap supply of protein from bacterial and fungal cells, by far the most important source of essential amino acids for all animals including humans, is the plant kingdom.
