The Early Nineteenth Century,in phases of error. At the same time no one doubts the femininity of, say, Anne Elliot or the masculinity of Mr Knightley. In other words, Jane Austen managed to preserve a sense of vital differences between her men and women while ascribing superogatory differences to them only for purposes of censure and ridicule.
