Synthesis of Chitin Microfibrils ,y electron microscopy of fungal cell walls by use of different techniques: shadow-casting, heavy-metal replicas, negative staining, and oblique and tangential sections. In the cell walls of fungi, chitin microfibrils constitute the skeleton responsible for their rigidity (for a review, see Ruiz-Herrera, 1978).

Michael Erdmann,Walter Waterfelde wall is an essentially rigid formation, a skeleton responsible for the shape of the cell and for the strength of the plant. On the other hand, the wall must be plastic and extensible so that a surface increase during extension may occur.
