Observatories in Earth Orbit and Beyondl growth halted and cell viability dropped. This was found to be associated with depletion of insulin from the medium early during the affected passage. Insulin depletion was found to be primarily the result of insulin degrading activity released by the cells during the preceding passage.

The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE)ed a significant influence on metabolism and cell growth. The low-temperature-cultivations showed a lower growth rate and a lower glucose consumption rate and, therefore, less lactate production. On the other hand, the maximum cell density and productivity seemed not to be affected by the temperature reduction.
