We show that the ratio of the formation rates of cataclysmic binaries and LMBX’s is appreciably smaller than the ratio of the number of white dwarfs to the number of neutron stars. Inconsistencies in the standard evolutionary scenario are discussed. It is possible that a binary nature of a star is the necessary condition for a formation of a high surface brightness planetary nebula.

Diskectomy

A Systematic Study of Magnetic Braking in Low-Mass Binariesal radiation (Rappaport .. 1982). We have extended this code by using a composite polytrope model for the secondary, wherein the structure of the radiative core is described by an n. = 3 polytrope and the convective envelope by an n = 3/2 polytrope. Our results are described in Rappaport .. 1983; this paper is a short summary.

Low-Mass X-Ray Binariesof the sun’s disk in Figure 1. This is the smallest known LMXB; the optical companion is slightly larger than the sunspot group and the bow-tie shaped accretion disk is the same size as Saturn’s ring system.
