Measurement of cardiac output by nuclear techniquese repeated as necessary for serial follow-up changes or to evaluate effect of therapeutic interventions [.-.]. Most nuclear techniques (except for the indicator dilution method) rely on measurement of end-diastolic (EDV) and end-systolic volume (ESV). The nuclear techniques will be discussed in four broad categories (Tables 4.1 and 4.2):

Various mechanisms interact to achieve such a control. Cardiac output varies widely according to physiological and/or environmental factors.

Effect of age on cardiac outputfunctional parameters are more pronounced during stress. However several parameters measured at rest do show changes with age. Amongst these parameters and probably the most important of all are the stroke volume and cardiac output.
